Hyun Jung Jun (b. 1989) is an artist born and raised in South Korea, who now works out of Chicago. She received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago with a focus in painting, communications, print media and photography (2014) and an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (2019). Her work has experimented with many different media, from time-based installations and performance, and towards the end of her graduate program incorporating domestic objects like candles, fabrics, wood, and food sculptures. She has stated that she draws much of the inspiration for her art from the nature and landscape around her, especially the mountainous areas of her home in South Korea. This can be seen in the cakes she creates for her ongoing project, and eponymously named Instagram account, Dream Cakes Test Kitchen, where she has made pastries that reference back to the hues and textures of the earth with a surrealist and almost dream-like quality. She has noted that her cakes in particular were a way of showing care and physically reconnecting with others during the Covid epidemic.

She was named one of 2021’s Breakout Artists by Newcity, a prominent Chicago-based arts media company. As of 2021, Jun is married and shares a work space with her husband and fellow 2020 Newcity Breakout Artist Cody Tumblin, who has been a co-collaborator on several of her exhibitions, including  A Long Sleep Before Spring and amarures + supports.
